What to wear tonight

Type your city or use your location. You see how it feels outside now, and how the evening will feel until midnight: the coldest hour, the chance of rain and what to wear.

Quick answer: dress for the coldest hour of your evening, not for how it feels when you leave. The way home is usually the coldest part. At 10 °C (50 °F) or less, wear a warm knit and a coat. Above 18 °C (64 °F), something light is enough. If it is mild now and cold later, take a layer with you.

How the tool plans your evening

The tool reads the hourly forecast of the place at four local hours: 18:00 (6 pm), 20:00 (8 pm), 22:00 (10 pm) and midnight. It shows only the hours that are still ahead. After midnight, it shows the evening of the new day.

Each hour gets a band by its "feels like" temperature, the temperature your body feels with the wind and the humidity. The band and the advice of the evening come from its coldest hour, because you dress once, when you go out, and the way home is usually the coldest part of the evening.

The first card is the weather now, the number you know. The tonight card says how many degrees warmer or colder its coldest hour is than now. When now and tonight are not in the same band, for example mild at 6 pm and cold at 10 pm, the tool says to take a layer.

The wind and rain tips use the strongest wind and the highest chance of rain of the evening hours. Each hour also shows its own chance of rain, so you can see if the rain comes before or after you get home. There is no sun tip: the UV index is low in the evening.

Plan tonight's outfit from your own clothes

This page knows only the weather. The Wearton web app also knows your closet. Its Today page shows an outfit of the day made from the clothes you own, and after a day out it asks how you felt, and moves your personal "feels like" temperature up or down.

The Wearton phone app, for iPhone and Android, also reads your calendar and plans outfits for your events, such as a dinner or a party, with the forecast of that time. It is coming soon.

Questions about what to wear tonight

What should I wear tonight?

Type your city at the top of this page. Dress for the coldest hour you will be out. At 10 °C (50 °F) or less, a warm knit and a coat. Above 10 °C and up to 18 °C (64 °F), a light layer, like a jacket or a cardigan. Above 18 °C, something light and breathable.

Will it be colder tonight than now?

Usually yes: the air cools after sunset. The tonight card shows how many degrees colder or warmer its coldest hour will feel than now. Both are the "feels like" temperature, so wind makes the evening feel colder.

Which hours does the tool use?

18:00 (6 pm), 20:00 (8 pm), 22:00 (10 pm) and midnight in the local time of the place you typed, not in the time of your computer. Hours that are already over are left out.

Do I need a jacket tonight?

Take one if the coldest hour of your evening is 18 °C (64 °F) or less, or if the tool says now and tonight are in different bands. A jacket you can carry is easier than being cold on the way home.

Do I need an umbrella tonight?

Each hour shows its chance of rain. Take an umbrella if the chance is high for the hours you are out. When the highest chance of rain of the evening is 40% or more, the tool also says to leave suede at home.

What should I wear tonight for dinner or a party?

This tool knows the weather, not your plans. Pick the outfit for the place, then add what the weather needs: a coat for a cold band, a light layer for a mild one, and closed shoes if rain is likely. If you will be inside most of the evening, a layer you can take off works best.

Is the tool free?

Yes. It is free and needs no sign-up and no account. To stop abuse, one address can ask up to 20 times a minute.

Do you keep my location?

No. If you use your location, your browser rounds it to about 1 km before it sends it, and it is never put in the page address. Our server uses it only to get the forecast and does not store it or write it in logs. If you type a city, the city is added to the page address, so you can bookmark or share the result.
